Success in Homeschool
If you are reading this blog, you have decided to pursue homeschooling your student, and you have determined that you have the time, passion, and resources to do so.
Here are some tips that will bring you success in your new endeavor.
Join a Homeschooling Group
By joining a local group, you will be able to talk with other families and get to know their at-home teaching experience and how they implement the curriculum. You can learn what aspects have worked for them and other activities you may want your student to participate in. These homeschool groups may offer weekly meetups where parents teach a subject or lesson to their group of students.
Deciding on Curriculum
One of the advantages of homeschooling is the ability for you to take a more individualized approach in teaching that caters to your student’s interests. When deciding on what to teach, you may choose to go the route of purchasing textbooks and workbooks for reading, writing, and math, or focus on those topics your student enjoys and adopting a curriculum that supports those preferences.
Dedicate a Homeschool Space
Where will you be teaching your student? It is essential to dedicate a specific space in your home where your student will be conducting their studies. By having a certain area, your student will be able to organize their schoolwork and supplies and adopt a healthy habit.
Set Homeschool Goals
Think about what you want your student to accomplish. What are your short-term goals and long-term goals for them? Remember that extracurricular activity and social time are essential as well. How will you incorporate these goals? Set goals to ensure that you have a direction for yourself and your student.
Homeschool Schedule
With your goals in mind, now it is time to make a schedule. Plan how you would like to organize your student’s academic schedule. Consider how much time per day, or per week, you would like to focus on each subject. Make time for learning outside the “classroom” and go on field trips that support the academic lessons that they are learning. Keep in mind that your schedule is fluid, and you can always change it to fit your student’s learning needs best.
Other Things to Keep in Mind
Explore all learning options before committing to a curriculum. Every student learns differently, and it is important to remember that as a homeschooling parent, it may take a couple of misses to find the right curriculum that best supports your student’s learning.
Remember to be flexible. Unlike traditional schooling, you are not bound by a strict schedule. There will be many ways to approach your goals; however, you must keep in mind that supporting your student is essential.
Homeschooling can be challenging; however, if you know you have the temperament, time, and dedication, it can be a successful experience for you and your student.
